HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Another candidate has announced plans to challenge Congressman Madison Cawthorn next year.

Jay Carey, a retired Army veteran and Hendersonville resident, announced his candidacy for North Carolina's 11th Congressional District during a news conference Thursday, April 15.

Carey said he's tired of seeing North Carolina fall behind when it comes to issues like technology, the economy, health care and academics.

"I believe my friends, family and neighbors deserve more. For too long, the decent hard working people of North Carolina have been left behind," Carey said.

Carey joins a growing number of challengers to Cawthorn's congressional seat.

“I am asking you to join me if you are fed up with the fear-mongering, half-truths, incompetence and false warrior bravado of our current representative. Madison Cawthorn isn’t working for us. He is not interested in supporting legislation that has put money in the pockets of hard-working Western North Carolinians. He fails to represent all of us on issues that really matter. That doesn’t work for me,” Carey said.
